TL;DR
Flight Controls Engineer (Aerospace): Designing and tuning flight control laws for an autonomous aircraft across modeling, simulation, hardware testing, and flight test with an accent on fly-by-wire systems, aircraft dynamics, and fault-tolerant operation. Focus on building high-fidelity MATLAB/Simulink models, deriving GNC requirements, testing degraded modes, and analyzing flight telemetry to recalibrate control parameters.

Location: Onsite in Montreal, Canada; Ottawa is the headquarters location.

Company

hirify.global is building Dominion Scout, Canada's first autonomous collaborative platform: a sovereign aircraft designed to operate alongside fighter jets and in Arctic conditions.

What you will do

  • Design, model, and tune inner- and outer-loop control logic for fly-by-wire systems across standard and dynamic flight regimes.
  • Build high-fidelity aircraft dynamic models in MATLAB/Simulink for control synthesis, performance evaluation, and handling qualities analysis.
  • Derive GNC requirements from mission parameters and define related software, system, actuator, sensor, and flight-control hardware requirements.
  • Lead mechanical sizing, installation, monitoring, and maintenance integration for flight-control hardware.
  • Lead SIL, HIL, and real-time simulator testing, including fault injection and degraded-mode performance evaluation.
  • Write flight-test plans, monitor tests in real time, analyze telemetry, and recalibrate control parameters between flights.

Requirements

  • Experience designing and tuning flight-control laws for fixed-wing or rotary-wing aircraft that have flown, crewed or uncrewed, rather than only simulated aircraft.
  • Strong grounding in classical and modern control theory, flight dynamics, and handling qualities.
  • Fluency in MATLAB/Simulink for aircraft modeling, control design, and analysis.
  • Hands-on SIL/HIL testing of flight-control software and the ability to trace problems from telemetry back to the control law.
  • Experience deriving and writing GNC requirements within a systems-engineering process.
  • Working knowledge of safety analysis for flight-critical systems, including FMEA, reliability, and redundancy management.

Nice to have

  • Flight-test experience, including test cards, on-console monitoring, and post-flight parameter identification.
  • Experience with fly-by-wire redundancy architectures and fault-tolerant control.
  • Control-law experience for high-performance or highly agile aircraft.
  • Auto-code generation from Simulink to embedded flight software.
  • Flight controls for uncrewed aircraft or for cold-weather and icing conditions.
  • Experience with clean-sheet or demonstrator aircraft programs, or defence and dual-use air programs.

Culture & Benefits

  • Full-time onsite role with direct work across autonomy, simulation, test, and manufacturing teams.
  • High-trust environment with short feedback loops, rapid iteration, and direct access to leadership.
  • Opportunity to build defence capability for the Canadian Armed Forces and allied operators, with systems already in the field.
  • Competitive base salary, company equity, additional impact-based equity, and comprehensive health benefits.
  • Equity is awarded to full-time employees only.
  • AI tools may support screening and response review, while final hiring decisions are made by people under Canadian privacy and employment laws.
