TL;DR
Staff Embedded Software Engineer (Quantum Sensing): Building real-time embedded software, FPGA interfaces, and firmware for commercial quantum sensing and navigation platforms with an accent on low-SWaP-C microcontroller architecture, system integration, and high-reliability qualification. Focus on designing Rust/C/C++ embedded systems, integrating SoC and FPGA subsystems, and establishing CI/CD, hardware-in-the-loop testing, and simulation workflows.

Location: Sydney, Australia; Workplace: On-site

Company

hirify.global develops quantum sensing and navigation products for defense and industrial applications, including field-validated quantum navigation solutions.

What you will do

  • Drive firmware architecture and implementation for microcontrollers using modern embedded frameworks such as Rust Embassy to deliver low-SWaP-C control systems for uncrewed platforms.
  • Own the architecture of embedded software and FPGA interfaces across Sensing R&D, balancing performance, maintainability, and delivery timelines.
  • Architect firmware for platform integration, including real-time data capture, display interfaces, and high-reliability integrations.
  • Define the embedded software roadmap for maturing quantum sensing platforms toward higher technology readiness levels, flight safety qualification, and compliance.
  • Establish CI/CD pipelines, automated embedded testing, hardware-in-the-loop testing, and simulation workflows.
  • Partner with Product Managers, Team Leads, and technical contributors while mentoring engineers and sharing technical knowledge.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of hands-on embedded software engineering experience designing, delivering, and maintaining complex real-time systems.
  • Expertise in Rust, specifically embedded Rust and async frameworks such as Embassy, or modern C/C++ for bare-metal microcontrollers and RTOS environments.
  • Practical experience with modern SoC architectures such as Xilinx Zynq and Vivado workflows, including FPGA logic, high-bandwidth DMA transfers, DSP pipelines, and processor subsystems.
  • Demonstrated ability to make pragmatic technical trade-offs and solve complex systems problems without over-engineering.
  • Strong technical communication skills, willingness to share knowledge, mentor peers, and participate in constructive design reviews.
  • Deep knowledge of SPI, I2C, CAN, UART, PCIe, and Ethernet/TCP-IP interfaces.
  • Hands-on experience with hardware-in-the-loop testing environments.

Nice to have

  • Familiarity with aerospace, defense, or high-reliability qualification standards such as DO-160, DO-178C, or Safety of Flight qualification pathways.
  • Experience with precision optical, physical, or sensor-based hardware, including precision temperature control, laser or optical drivers, or signal conditioning.
  • Experience with SystemVerilog or VHDL logic design and cocotb verification workflows.
  • Familiarity with Yocto, customized embedded Linux distributions, or kernel driver development.
  • Experience with uncrewed vehicles such as UAVs or UUVs, robotics, or dual-use defense technology.

Culture & Benefits

  • Full-time, permanent employment in an on-site Sensing R&D role.
  • Cross-functional collaboration across hardware, firmware, software, product, and technical teams.
  • Hands-on technical contribution combined with department-level architectural leadership and mentorship.
