Product Counsel (Payroll and Fintech)

Location: San Francisco, CA — Hybrid, with office attendance approximately 2–3 days per week or more depending on the role. The role supports products for US businesses and may be based in the San Francisco or San Jose metro areas.

Salary: $221,275–$272,906 per year in New York/San Francisco. Final compensation depends on location, experience, and expertise.

What you will do

• Provide end-to-end legal advice for the development, review, and advancement of payroll, fintech, tax, payments, benefits, and HR products.
• Navigate complex regulatory frameworks and advise on the risk-adjusted development and scaling of highly regulated domestic and global products.
• Counsel Product, Engineering, Design, Business, Commercial, Privacy, Security, Risk, and other stakeholders on product, partnership, payments, privacy, and tax matters.
• Develop scalable processes, standards, playbooks, and tooling to manage legal risk and accelerate product expansion.
• Partner with Commercial and Contracts Counsel on product risk, redlines, negotiations, and deal closure.
• Test, pilot, and recommend AI-driven legal review solutions while establishing human-in-the-loop controls.

Requirements

• JD degree and active membership or license to practice law in a State bar.
• 7+ years of combined legal experience, including experience in an in-house legal department at a technology company.
• Experience supporting payroll, fintech, tax, and payment products, including the launch and scaling of highly regulated domestic and global products.
• Experience advising on payroll products or partnerships, domestic and international payments, data privacy, and tax.
• Experience building consensus, establishing strong relationships, and helping business clients understand and own risk-based decisions.
• Experience creatively solving problems while balancing legal risk and business needs.
• Attention to detail, follow-through in a fast-paced environment, and the ability to work collaboratively, independently, cross-functionally, and under pressure.
• Experience working closely with Commercial or Contracts Counsel to support deal closure.
• Experience with AI review tools, including GCAI or similar.
• Demonstrated success building and improving processes rather than only running them.
• A demonstrated ability to position Product Legal as a driver of innovation and business impact.
