Director, AMER Payroll

Location: Hybrid in San Jose, Costa Rica

What you will do

• Lead end-to-end payroll operations for clients across the Americas, covering multiple countries and regulatory environments.
• Develop and maintain payroll processes and procedures that improve accuracy, compliance, and efficiency.
• Lead, mentor, and manage a high-performing team of payroll professionals.
• Handle complex client payroll inquiries and escalations, and collaborate with HR, Finance, IT, and Client Services on service delivery.
• Drive payroll automation, standardization, KPIs, and SLAs to support continuous improvement.
• Support client onboarding and implementation, manage third-party payroll provider and tax authority relationships, and report on payroll performance and compliance to senior management.

Requirements

• Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
• At least 5 years of leadership experience overseeing multi-country or regional payroll operations.
• Extensive knowledge of payroll laws, regulations, and tax compliance across countries in the Americas, including the USA, Canada, Mexico, and Brazil.
• Experience managing large-scale payroll operations for multiple clients or a complex organization.
• Proven ability to lead, motivate, and develop a high-performing team.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with close attention to detail.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and client-facing skills.
• Proficiency in payroll software and ERP systems such as SAP, Workday, or Oracle.
• Advanced Excel skills, including pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, and data analysis; ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Nice to have

• Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) certification or an equivalent international payroll certification.
