Regional Research Economist, Economic Research (AI)

Location: Tokyo, Japan; hybrid policy requiring staff to be in an office at least 25% of the time, with some roles requiring more office time.

What you will do

• Build and maintain relationships with academic institutions, policy think tanks, governments, industry, civil society, and other research partners in the region.
• Advance country- and region-specific research collaborations on AI’s economic impact and translate findings into policy recommendations.
• Contribute to the Anthropic Economic Index, including regionally relevant analysis and expansion of its measurement capabilities.
• Design empirical research on AI’s effects on labor markets, productivity, task transformation, inequality, displacement, industry disruption, adaptation, GDP, unemployment, and economic trajectories under different adoption scenarios.
• Develop methodological approaches using econometrics, machine learning, structural estimation, and novel measurement systems.
• Work with technical teams to improve measurement infrastructure and data collection, and communicate findings through publications, policy briefs, and presentations.

Requirements

• PhD in Economics.
• Strong empirical research track record, especially combining novel data sources with economic theory or applying frontier causal inference and machine learning methods.
• Demonstrated experience working in the region and relevant relationships across it.
• Proficiency in Python, R, SQL, or similar tools for large-scale data analysis.
• Ability to lead complex research projects from conception through publication.
• Ability to communicate technical findings to diverse audiences.
• Ability to build relationships across academic, policy, and industry communities.
• Minimum education: bachelor’s degree or equivalent education, training, and/or experience; the required field of study must be relevant to the role through coursework, training, or professional experience.
• Required experience will correlate with the internal job level requirements.

Nice to have

• Experience studying AI’s economic impact, including labor markets, occupational change, task-based technological transformation, large-scale data and econometric analysis, large language models for social science, policy-relevant research, causal inference, macroeconomic modeling, time-series forecasting, agent-based modeling, or large-scale simulation.
• Experience with novel datasets and measurement systems.
• Comfort learning new technical tools and frameworks.
• Strong interest in ensuring AI development benefits humanity.
• Comfort working with AI systems and critically evaluating their capabilities and limitations.
