Principal Software Engineer, Mission Design (Aerospace)

Location: San Jose, CA; preferred schedule is three days per week on-site at the San Jose office, with alternative locations considered. Muon is currently registered and able to hire in AL, AZ, CA, CO, CT, DC, FL, GA, IL, IA, ID, MD, MA, MI, MN, MO, NJ, NY, NC, OH, OR, PA, TN, TX, VT, VA, and WA. Applicants must meet U.S. export-control eligibility requirements.

Salary: $266,000–$298,000 per year, plus equity and benefits.

What you will do

• Plan and design software solutions for potential satellite missions based on the full software architecture, roadmap, and mission-specific requirements.
• Partner with Business Development to prioritize and staff high-impact projects, then guide them to timely customer value.
• Capture common customer needs in organizational plans and the Product Roadmap.
• Steward architectural standards and guardrails while maintaining engineering velocity, security, reliability, and performance.
• Support Customer Solutions Software Engineers in customer engagements and serve as the escalation point for critical discussions and design questions.
• Align mission software roadmaps with the company strategy and help define software engineering training plans.

Requirements

• Expertise in whole-system design, holistic testing, deployment strategy, and modern software engineering methodology.
• Extensive knowledge of theory and practice across aerospace, robotics, or an adjacent domain.
• Excellent negotiation skills in organizational and technical contexts.
• Expertise in multiple programming languages.
• Expertise in distributed systems theory and practice.
• Eligibility to access export-controlled information as a U.S. person, without required export authorization, or through eligibility and reasonable likelihood of obtaining the required authorization.

Nice to have

• Expertise with C++ and Python.
• Experience with AWS, Kubernetes, containers, and related cloud technologies.
• Experience with embedded software, high-performance computing, FPGA, or related domains.
• Experience with statistical analysis and/or machine learning.
