Learning & Development Manager

Location: Alajuela, Costa Rica (on-site); Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; regular presence on the shop floor is desirable for 70% of the time. Occasional travel and extended work hours may be required.

What you will do

• Develop and implement an end-to-end learning strategy aligned with operational objectives, workforce planning, succession, and career pathways.
• Design, develop, and oversee technical, operational, safety, compliance, leadership, classroom, on-the-job, digital, simulation, and certification training.
• Manage training evaluation, competency attainment, completion, compliance, cost, and performance metrics, including time to competence.
• Oversee the Learning Management System, training matrices, licensing and certification tracking, audit readiness, and system administration.
• Partner with Operations, Health & Safety, site and regional leadership on capability gaps, operational change, automation, NPI, process improvement, knowledge transfer, CAPA support, and standardization.
• Lead, coach, and develop trainers and L&D professionals; coordinate the learning center, new-hire experience, cross-training plans, technical training, NCR human-error monitoring, and Operational Excellence activities.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Human Resources, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
• Train-the-Trainer certification.
• Five to eight years of experience in Learning & Development, Training, or Capability roles within operational environments.
• Previous formal experience supervising personnel and managing trainers or teams.
• Three to five years of experience in the medical industry and medical devices.
• Demonstrated experience delivering technical, safety, operational, and compliance training, plus internal auditor experience or internal and external audit exposure.
• Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations, including ISO 9000:2000, 21 CFR Part 820, and ISO 13485:2012; experience with FDA and TUV external audits.
• Strong learning and development knowledge, capability to generate work skills across multiple departments, project leadership, problem-solving, facilitation, coaching, stakeholder management, and analytical skills.
• Advanced Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Visio, and Project skills; intermediate video-editing skills; ability to understand technical drawings, SOPs, and manuals.
• Strong assertive communication skills in Spanish and English, with advanced reading, writing, and technical communication abilities.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, shift-based operational environment.
• Ability to lift up to 35 kilograms, stand, walk, sit, use hands for handling and reaching, and work around potential caustic chemicals and moderate workplace noise.

Nice to have

• SEM, internal auditor, or direct participation experience in audits.
• Experience supporting multi-site or high-volume operations.
