Photography Director, The Cut

Location: New York, NY; occasional travel for assignments and shoots

Salary: $175,000–$195,000 USD base pay per year

What you will do

• Set and lead The Cut’s visual strategy across print, digital, social, and video.
• Direct photo shoot production, including commissioning creative teams, coordinating vendors, managing budgets, and ensuring successful delivery.
• Lead, mentor, and develop the photo team while assigning work, overseeing workloads, and maintaining visual quality.
• Manage photo research, image selection, credits, CMS uploads, publication, contracts, fees, usage rights, copyright compliance, and ethical standards.
• Build relationships with editors, photo agencies, photographers, stylists, and studios; pitch new photographers, essays, and photo-driven stories.
• Collaborate with sales, partnerships, editorial, web, social, and video teams to deliver visual work across platforms.

Requirements

• At least 10 years of experience in visual production, photo editing, or a related field.
• Experience leading and developing talent as a strong people manager.
• Excellent editorial judgment and experience managing teams developing visual stories across platforms.
• Detailed understanding of the requirements of print, digital, social, and video platforms.
• Strong understanding of photography, art direction, and visual storytelling.
• Proficiency in photo-editing software such as Adobe Creative Suite and Photoshop.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to travel occasionally for assignments and shoots.
• Interest in culture, including politics, fashion, and celebrity, and understanding of what makes a Cut story.
