Software Engineer, Backend (Clearing)

Location: Chicago, Illinois, United States; four days per week in the office.

Salary: $107,525–$139,150 base salary annually, with potential annual incentive compensation and long-term equity participation.

What you will do

• Design, develop, maintain, and operate scalable Java microservices for trade clearing.
• Build services supporting trade processing, margin, settlement, and integrated-system reconciliation.
• Optimize PostgreSQL schemas and SQL queries while maintaining data integrity and consistency.
• Develop production metrics, logs, traces, alerting, and service-level objectives for owned services.
• Contribute to architecture decision records, design documents, testing, production support, and team documentation.
• Use AI-assisted development tools such as Claude or Copilot responsibly to improve code quality and productivity.

Requirements

• At least five years of backend development experience and at least three years of professional Java experience.
• Experience building and operating distributed, service-based systems in production across the full software lifecycle.
• Strong knowledge of object-oriented and functional programming, software engineering principles, design patterns, data modeling, and SQL.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without current or future employer sponsorship.
• Ability to collaborate with non-technical partners and turn concepts into shipped, working solutions.

Nice to have

• Kubernetes, Nomad, or similar container orchestration experience.
• Kafka or equivalent event-streaming experience.
• Capital markets clearing, post-trade systems, Linux, and disciplined version-control practices.
• Python, JVM languages such as Clojure, Scala, or Kotlin, FIX protocol, distributed tracing, or observability tooling.
