Anthropic STEM Fellow (AI)

Location: United States; default location is San Francisco, with remote engagements considered within the United States in certain circumstances. Fellows must attend a one-week in-person orientation in San Francisco and have existing full-time authorization to work in the United States.

Compensation: $100,000–$167,000 USD for the four-month fellowship, equivalent to $300,000–$500,000 annualized.

What you will do

• Define grand challenges and long-horizon open problems where expert judgment is essential and Claude falls short.
• Build comprehensive datasets, simulations, and rigorous evaluations for scientific reasoning and experimental planning.
• Apply Claude to open problems in mathematics, physics, life sciences, engineering, or another STEM domain.
• Use test-time compute strategies and integrate scientific software and tools used in the relevant field.
• Systematically identify cases where models are confidently wrong and measure meaningful progress.
• Collaborate in a small pod with Fellows and Anthropic researchers to develop and pressure-test methods.

Requirements

• PhD in a STEM field and several years of experience, such as postdoctoral or faculty experience.
• Hands-on experience using Claude and Claude Code in day-to-day work.
• Strong scientific judgment and interest in AI reasoning about difficult questions in the relevant field.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-agency environment and deliver concrete results within a few months.
• Existing full-time authorization to work in the United States; visa sponsorship is not available.
• Availability for the full-time program from January 12 to May 8, 2027, including the in-person San Francisco orientation.

Nice to have

• Prior machine learning experience.
• Experience defining scientific evaluations or building datasets and simulations.
