Senior AI R&D Engineer in Model Training (f/m/d)

Location: Hybrid in Heidelberg or Berlin, Germany; on-site at least two days per week. Berlin-based employees travel to Heidelberg for a few days approximately every two months.

What you will do

• Build and improve model training pipelines and supporting infrastructure.
• Optimize training workload scheduling on Kubernetes clusters for robustness, performance, and faster iteration.
• Enable large-scale code execution for reinforcement learning.
• Improve evaluation code and increase inference throughput.
• Strengthen maintainability through testing, design improvements, architecture changes, and incremental refactoring.
• Collaborate through pair and mob programming while making design decisions and setting priorities with the team.

Requirements

• Senior-level software engineering experience and the ability to work effectively in research-heavy codebases.
• Ability to change existing code behavior while leaving it better tested and easier to understand.
• Understanding of low coupling, high cohesion, and incremental refactoring.
• Experience with or ability to learn Python; occasional Rust codebases are also used.
• Experience with Kubernetes-based infrastructure is useful for the model training pipeline.
• Availability for hybrid work with at least two on-site days per week in Heidelberg or Berlin is required.
