TL;DR
Software Developer (Backend, Java/Spring) (Transit Software): Building and maintaining scalable, cloud-based transportation applications with an accent on Java and Spring Boot services, React front ends, REST APIs, and relational databases. Focus on designing production software, writing comprehensive tests, debugging deployed systems, supporting on-call operations, and integrating AI coding assistants into daily development.
Location: Fully remote within the United States
Salary: $115,000–$145,000 per year

What you will do
- Build and maintain Java and Spring Boot backend services for transit websites, applications, and third-party platforms.
- Develop React front ends that consume the backend APIs.
- Take work from backlog through production, including implementation, testing, code review, and operational support.
- Design and consume REST APIs and work with relational database schemas and queries.
- Debug issues in deployed environments and participate in an on-call rotation.
- Collaborate with senior engineers and communicate directly with transit agency clients.
Requirements
- 3–5 years of production software development experience with Java and Spring or Spring Boot.
- Experience designing and consuming REST APIs used by other applications or teams.
- Experience with MySQL or PostgreSQL, including query optimization and safe schema changes.
- Experience building React front ends against self-developed APIs.
- Experience writing unit, integration, and end-to-end tests as part of regular development.
- Experience using AI coding assistants daily, debugging deployed systems, and participating in on-call support.
Nice to have
- Experience with GTFS, GTFS-Realtime, or other transit and mobility data standards.
- Experience with OpenTripPlanner, OneBusAway, or other open-source transportation software.
- Experience with AWS or a comparable cloud environment.
- Experience with Docker and CI/CD tools such as Jenkins or GitHub Actions.
- Consulting or client-facing experience.
