TL;DR
Staff Software Engineer, iOS (Snapchat Camera/iOS): Building and evolving the architecture and performance of Snapchat’s Camera with an accent on high-performance iOS systems, rendering, concurrency, memory, power efficiency, and stability. Focus on leading technically ambiguous initiatives, solving complex platform constraints, and improving reliability and developer velocity across a mature codebase.
Location: London; expected to work in an office 4+ days per week

What you will do
- Own and evolve critical parts of chat’s Camera architecture and iOS platform.
- Design and build reliable, high-performance systems under strict latency, memory, power, and stability constraints.
- Set technical direction for initiatives involving application architecture, rendering, concurrency, performance, and platform infrastructure.
- Lead technically ambiguous projects from exploration through architecture, implementation, launch, and long-term operation.
- Partner with Product, Design, and Engineering to shape product and technical direction.
- Raise engineering standards through architecture reviews, code reviews, mentorship, and improvements to engineering practices.
Requirements
- Deep expertise building and optimizing complex production iOS applications.
- Strong knowledge of iOS internals, application lifecycle, concurrency, memory management, performance, and the Objective-C runtime.
- Strong computer science fundamentals, including algorithms, data structures, concurrency, and software architecture.
- At least 9 years of software development experience with a Bachelor’s degree, 8 years with a Master’s degree, or 5 years with a PhD.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Demonstrated technical leadership and experience serving as a technical authority for complex systems, teams, or engineering domains.
Nice to have
- Experience with Swift and C/C++ interoperability.
- Experience with graphics or real-time systems using Metal, OpenGL, or similar technologies.
- Experience optimizing latency, memory, CPU/GPU utilization, power efficiency, and application stability.
- Experience leading architecture or technical initiatives across multiple engineers or teams.
