TL;DR

Firmware Engineer Intern (Embedded C): Developing embedded C firmware and C/Python testing infrastructure for PAM4 DSPs used in high-speed optical modules with an accent on DSP control, processor architecture, and networking PHY layers. Focus on debugging complex hardware/software issues, tracing root causes, and taking features from design through customer release.

Location: Ottawa, Canada

Salary: CAD 32–43 per hour

What you will do

Develop embedded C firmware for controlling complex DSP hardware.
Build C and Python test code for utilities, GUIs, regression testing, and simulation infrastructure.
Take features from concept through design, review, implementation, testing, and customer release.
Develop mission-critical features for major cloud customers.
Debug complex issues, identify root causes with hardware and software teams, and follow up on Jira tickets through resolution.

Requirements

Currently pursuing a BS degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
At least one year of related coursework.
Strong programming skills in C and Python.
Understanding of computer and processor architecture, including how processors interact with memory and peripherals.
Understanding of fundamental networking concepts based on the OSI model, with emphasis on the PHY through data-link layers.
Good problem-solving, verbal, and written communication skills in English.

Nice to have

Knowledge of Git, Linux, Makefiles, GDB, IDEs, and Bash.
Experience with Jira, GitLab, Jenkins, continuous integration, code reviews, and regression testing.
Experience with MCU-based embedded processor environments.
Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools and the ability to critically evaluate generated code.
