TL;DR
Fire Coordinator I (Wildland Fire): Coordinating fire capacity-building programs, emergency response resources, and wildfire operations across Region 5 with an accent on community partnerships, firefighter training, and incident management. Focus on responding to wildfires and all-hazard incidents, developing mutual-aid and strike-team resources, and operating suppression equipment in demanding field conditions.

Location: Edinburg, Texas; residency within 30 minutes of the duty station is required. Region 5 offices are located in Alice, Beeville, and Edinburg.

Proposed minimum salary: $4,500 per month.

Texas A&M Forest Service supports communities and emergency response organizations through fire assistance, training, wildfire response, and regional capacity-building programs.

What you will do

  • Deliver capacity-building programs to volunteer, combination, and municipal career fire departments.
  • Coordinate firefighter training, wildfire preparedness, resource requests, and communications with local, state, and federal officials.
  • Respond to wildfires and all-hazard incidents, including operating and maintaining wildland fire suppression equipment.
  • Support mutual-aid agreements, regional wildfire strike teams, incident management teams, and rural community fire protection programs.
  • Serve on incident management, fire prevention, and wildland-urban-interface mitigation teams.
  • Maintain agency property, complete required training and reporting, and follow agency policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree, or eligibility under internal Texas A&M Forest Service criteria in lieu of a degree.
  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License or ability to obtain one within 180 days of employment.
  • Ability to respond to wildfires and all-hazard incidents and work long hours in primitive and harsh environmental conditions.
  • Ability to pass the moderate physical fitness standard: a 2-mile walk carrying a 25-pound pack in 30 minutes or less.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills; proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Required to establish residency within 30 minutes of the duty station and carry an agency cell phone for 24/7 communication.

Nice to have

  • Firefighter or instructor experience with a recognized volunteer or career fire department or wildland fire agency.
  • Education in natural resources, land management, fire science, emergency management, public administration, or business administration.
  • Wildland firefighting skills and NWCG, NFPA 1001, 1021, or 1041 training or certification.
  • TCFP or SFFMA Basic Firefighter certification or higher.
