Senior Project Manager – Planning & Development (Capital Projects): Leading complex university capital projects from feasibility and business case development through planning, design, procurement, and delivery with an accent on stakeholder engagement, governance, and design leadership. Focus on developing strategic investment recommendations, managing consultant teams, budgets, risks, and approvals, and coordinating construction handover for research, teaching, library, and student environments.

Location: Auckland City Campus, Auckland, New Zealand. Hybrid working arrangements are available, including working from home and flexible hours.

Salary: NZ$168,000–NZ$182,000 per year, negotiable depending on skills and experience.

What you will do

  • Lead major capital projects through feasibility, business case development, planning, design, procurement, construction delivery, commissioning, and handover.
  • Develop project briefs, business cases, and strategic recommendations to support investment decisions.
  • Manage consultant teams, project budgets, risks, programmes, contracts, procurement, and approvals.
  • Support formal governance, senior-level decision-making, and stakeholder engagement across faculties, service divisions, consultants, contractors, and external partners.
  • Shape new-build and refurbishment projects across research facilities, laboratories, libraries, teaching spaces, and student environments.

Requirements

  • Extensive experience establishing and leading major capital projects or programmes in complex, multi-stakeholder environments.
  • Strong capability in business case development, project planning, design management, and consultant leadership.
  • Experience working within formal governance structures and presenting to senior leadership and decision-making groups.
  • Exceptional stakeholder engagement, influencing, negotiation, and consensus-building skills.
  • Experience managing budgets, procurement, contracts, risks, and approval processes.
  • A relevant tertiary qualification in project management, construction, engineering, architecture, property, or a related discipline.

Nice to have

  • Experience in complex institutional, government, tertiary education, research, or healthcare environments.
  • Background in client-side or consultancy project management.
