Principal Specialist Internet Optimisation

Location: Macquarie Park, Sydney, Australia. Hybrid arrangement with three days in the office and two days remote or from home.

What you will do

• Define the Internet optimisation strategy, technical roadmap, architecture principles and performance outcomes across Internet Core, peering, transit, edge routing, DNS, DDoS protection, CDN and content interconnection.
• Own BGP routing policy, traffic engineering, route hygiene and inter-domain routing controls across multi-homed Internet environments.
• Analyse telemetry, active measurements, flow data, service KPIs and customer experience signals to diagnose latency, packet loss, throughput, DNS, CDN, gaming, streaming, cloud access and international connectivity issues.
• Act as the principal design authority for high-risk and cross-domain Internet optimisation decisions, including routing, interconnection, DNS, DDoS protection and observability.
• Drive API-first automation, telemetry, data models, dashboards and analytical tooling for policy validation, compliance, change assurance and technical diagnosis.
• Lead major Internet incident response, root-cause analysis, systemic improvements, troubleshooting playbooks and knowledge transfer.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
• Typically 15+ years of experience in large-scale IP or Internet network engineering within a carrier, hyperscaler, content network, major enterprise or technology vendor environment.
• Expert knowledge of BGP, routing policy, peering, transit, IXPs, private interconnects, edge routing, Internet Core, anycast, RPKI and routing security.
• Advanced ability to analyse latency, loss, jitter, throughput, congestion, utilisation, flow telemetry and active measurements, with strong knowledge of TCP, QUIC, DNS, CDN, caching and cloud connectivity.
• Practical experience with APIs, Netconf/YANG, Ansible, streaming telemetry, SNMP, NetFlow/IPFIX, logs, synthetic testing and event correlation, plus scripting or data analysis using Python, SQL or equivalent.
• Strong executive communication, commercial awareness, stakeholder influence, mentoring and cross-company collaboration skills.

Nice to have

• Postgraduate qualification or expert-level certification such as CCIE or JNCIE.
• Industry credibility and experience leading through expertise without formal authority.
