TL;DR
Device Systems Engineer (IoT Hardware): Analysing and improving the performance of animal-worn collars across large fleets, covering power consumption, battery life, GPS, sensors, radios, firmware, and real-world usage with an accent on noisy telemetry and physical-system reasoning. Focus on distinguishing physics, firmware, and usage problems, translating data into hardware and product improvements, and following changes through implementation and production validation.
Location: Auckland, New Zealand; on-site
Company
develops connected animal-worn collar systems that help farmers manage cattle grazing more productively and sustainably.
What you will do
- Analyse collar performance across large fleets, including power consumption, battery life, GPS, sensor behaviour, and real-world operating conditions.
- Build a ground-truth understanding of how the devices are used on farms and identify differences between intended and actual usage.
- Process fleet telemetry, logs, and field data to distinguish genuine performance effects from data-quality artefacts.
- Apply first-principles reasoning to sensors, radios, batteries, firmware, and physical operating conditions.
- Inform new product designs and hardware revisions using evidence from field performance.
- Communicate findings across firmware, hardware, and product teams and follow improvements through implementation, validation, and production.
Requirements
- Background in engineering science, physics, or a similarly quantitative technical discipline, with experience applying it to physical-world problems.
- Strong data-analysis skills and experience working with large, noisy datasets in Python or a similar language.
- Ability to clean, filter, and validate data before drawing conclusions.
- Strong first-principles reasoning, curiosity, ownership, and follow-through.
- Strong communication skills for explaining technical findings to engineers across disciplines.
- Ability to work on-site in Auckland, New Zealand.
Nice to have
- Experience in statistics or applied mathematics.
- Experience working on optimisation problems.
- Curiosity about farming, animal welfare, or hardware operating outdoors and on live animals.
Culture & Benefits
- Mission-driven work focused on improving farming productivity, sustainability, and animal welfare.
- High-performance culture with autonomy, learning, and responsibility for meaningful technical problems.
