Fishery Resources Specialist (Fisheries and Aquaculture): Supporting sustainable fisheries and aquaculture management in the Mediterranean and Black Sea through scientific analysis, technical advice, capacity development, and information management with an accent on stock assessment, ecosystem and climate-related analysis, and fisheries data interoperability. Focus on developing analytical tools and workflows, supporting scientific working groups, assessing marine resources and aquaculture systems, and contributing to regional management, compliance, and advisory activities.

Location: Home-based or at GFCM headquarters in Rome, Italy

hirify.global's General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean supports the conservation and sustainable use of living marine resources and the sustainable development of aquaculture in the Mediterranean and Black Sea.

What you will do

  • Provide technical inputs to the GFCM 2030 Strategy and advice on sustainable fisheries and aquaculture management.
  • Analyze ecological, biological, economic, market, governance, and social issues related to fisheries and natural resources.
  • Prepare scientific data, analytical outputs, technical documentation, stock assessments, and ecosystem-related assessments.
  • Develop and improve analytical tools, procedures, workflows, information repositories, and interoperability practices.
  • Support scientific working groups, national experts, advisory bodies, research programmes, capacity development, and regional events.
  • Contribute to aquaculture assessment, compliance and MCS activities, IUU fishing prevention, data collection systems, and technical publications.

Requirements

  • Advanced university degree or relevant technical specialization in fisheries, aquaculture, natural resources, marine biology, data science, economics, engineering, law, or a related field.
  • At least one year of relevant professional experience in fisheries research, sustainable aquaculture, natural resource management, project implementation, data analysis, MCS, compliance, or related work.
  • Working knowledge of English or French is required for PSAs; consultants must have working knowledge of English, French, or Spanish.
  • Experience in fisheries assessment, fisheries data analysis, climate change, vulnerable species conservation, ecosystem-based management, compliance, or MCS.
  • Experience with analytical methods, data and information management, scientific workflows, technical tools, and support for scientific working groups or advisory bodies.
  • Proficiency in Excel and the Microsoft Office package, with strong drafting and communication skills.

Culture & Benefits

  • Consultant or Personal Services Agreement engagement for up to 11 months, renewable.
  • Work may be performed from home or at the GFCM headquarters in Rome.
  • Work with international and intergovernmental fisheries experts and national institutions.
  • Appointment is subject to medical certification, accreditation, residency or visa requirements, and security clearances.
