Senior Software Engineer (Backend), Co-Experience

Location: San Mateo, California, United States. Office-based roles require onsite attendance Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with optional presence on Monday and Friday.

Salary: $196,750–$243,290 USD annual base pay, plus equity compensation and benefits.

What you will do

• Maintain, improve, and scale the Roblox Party System for millions of concurrent users with a safety-first approach.
• Own projects end to end, from technical planning and architecture through launch, iteration, and measurable impact.
• Build backend infrastructure and features for age-appropriate communication and social interaction.
• Integrate matchmaking, recommendations, voice, economy, and other platform systems in reusable, performant, and safe ways.
• Collaborate with product, design, UXR, frontend, backend, and other engineering teams.
• Raise engineering standards, resolve production escalations, and accelerate junior engineers’ productivity.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience with microservice architectures and scalability and reliability challenges, or 4+ years with a graduate degree in computer science or a related field.
• 3+ years of experience building consumer-facing APIs for large numbers of concurrent users.
• Strong server-side development and design skills with proficiency in at least one compiled language such as C#, C++, Java, or Golang.
• Experience using AI-assisted development tools to navigate large codebases and deliver production-ready code efficiently.
• Ability to write clear technical design documents and align stakeholders through architectural review.
