TL;DR
Lab Automation Engineer II (Lab Automation/Hamilton Microlab STAR): Developing and integrating laboratory automation systems and software tools for clinical and life science environments with an accent on liquid-handling robotics, equipment validation, and cross-functional implementation. Focus on scripting automation instruments, troubleshooting complex laboratory workflows, analyzing process data, and supporting reliable operation.

Location: South San Francisco, California, United States. Onsite schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00am–5:00pm, at 345 Oyster Point Boulevard.

Salary: $100,000–$135,000 per year.

What you will do

  • Lead the development and integration of laboratory automation systems and related software tools.
  • Develop scripts for liquid-handling robots and laboratory automation instruments, including Hamilton Microlab STAR systems.
  • Prepare equipment validation documentation and operating procedures.
  • Coordinate with end users, laboratory supervisors, process owners, and cross-functional teams to implement automation solutions.
  • Lead troubleshooting, analyze data, and support process-related decisions.
  • Participate in off-hours on-call service as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, chemical or biological life science, or a related field.
  • At least 2 years of experience with laboratory automation instruments in a clinical laboratory, biotechnology, or life science environment.
  • Ability to read and understand technical documentation.
  • Experience handling projects independently and maintaining documentation.
  • Strong communication, teamwork, analytical, and troubleshooting skills.

Nice to have

  • At least 1 year of programming experience in C, Python, and scripting languages.
  • At least 1 year of experience developing automation solutions.
