TL;DR
Distinguished Engineer (Machine Learning): Building and leading large-scale machine learning systems for Roblox search and recommendations, including traditional ML and Generative AI infrastructure, with an accent on candidate generation, ranking, retrieval, and personalization. Focus on designing models and serving systems with billions of parameters, evolving training and evaluation infrastructure, and setting the technical direction for discovery products at massive scale.
Location: San Mateo, California, United States; office presence required Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with optional presence on Monday and Friday
Salary: $419,390–$457,970 USD annual base pay

What you will do
- Set the technical vision and execution strategy for machine learning across search and discovery teams.
- Lead the development of search and recommendation systems that personalize content distribution and improve user and developer value.
- Build infrastructure for training, serving, and evaluating traditional machine learning and Generative AI models.
- Design model and system architectures involving embedding-based retrieval, transformers, and LLM-based workflows.
- Provide technical direction to engineers, author specifications, and lead complex decisions across teams.
- Balance research with practical product delivery and represent Roblox in relevant industry and technical communities.
Requirements
- 10+ years of experience delivering and improving large-scale search and recommendation systems.
- Experience building and launching machine learning models with billions of parameters in production.
- Deep technical expertise across machine learning, data, infrastructure, and multiple programming languages and technologies.
- Ability to break long-term product requirements into iterative deliverables and facilitate complex technical decisions across organizations.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related discipline.
- For US-based roles, certain US visa-based work authorizations may not be supported, and future H-1B sponsorship may not be available.

- Master’s degree or PhD in Computer Science or a related discipline.
