Staff Software Engineer (Java/Python)

Location: Atlanta, Georgia, United States; office-first culture with three days per week in the office for most roles

Annual base pay: $139,725–$209,588 USD for candidates based in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Nevada, New York, Rhode Island, and Washington.

What you will do

• Design, build, operate, and improve distributed backend services using Java, Spring Boot, Maven, APIs, asynchronous workflows, reporting, exports, and scheduling.
• Develop event-driven functionality with Kafka, caching, relational storage, service integrations, and resilient distributed-system patterns.
• Build and optimize batch and streaming data pipelines with Python, PySpark, Azure Databricks, and Delta Lake.
• Implement schema evolution, deduplication, replay, late-data handling, data-quality controls, tenant isolation, and secure Azure data operations.
• Improve observability with metrics, logs, traces, dashboards, monitors, and alerts using Datadog, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, and Micrometer.
• Participate in on-call and incident response, create runbooks and diagnostic tools, and reduce alert noise and recurring operational toil.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience building and operating production software systems as an autonomous individual contributor.
• Strong Java and Spring Boot experience with distributed systems, microservices, asynchronous workflows, and preferably Apache Kafka.
• Production experience with Python, PySpark, Apache Spark, Delta Lake, and Azure Databricks or a comparable managed Spark platform.
• Hands-on experience with test-driven development, automated testing, quality gates, monitoring, alerting, Datadog, and Grafana.
• Experience responding to PagerDuty or equivalent production incidents and willingness to participate in an on-call rotation.
• Ability to diagnose complex reliability and performance problems, communicate technical trade-offs, and use AI-assisted engineering tools such as Devin or Claude.

Nice to have

• Experience optimizing Spark or Databricks workloads, using Databricks SQL and SDKs, and managing Delta operations and schema migrations.
• Familiarity with Azure Blob Storage, Azure Identity, Azure Key Vault, Kubernetes, containers, CI/CD, and infrastructure as code.
• Experience with service-level indicators, service-level objectives, error budgets, data governance, encryption, auditability, and tenant isolation.
