Lead Backend Engineer

Location: Kaunas Office, hybrid

Base pay: €3,330–€6,660 gross monthly. Additional compensation includes yearly bonuses of approximately 10% of annual salary and Booking Holdings RSUs worth $20,000 gross, with possible yearly refreshes.

What you will do

• Lead the design, delivery, deployment, and production support of complex backend features.
• Contribute to technical design reviews, architecture discussions, code reviews, and maintainable implementation.
• Collaborate with product managers, commercial partners, engineering, data science, and business intelligence teams.
• Mentor less-experienced engineers through technical guidance, knowledge sharing, and pairing.
• Participate in on-call rotations, monitor system health, investigate production issues, and document bugs.
• Improve system performance, reduce complexity, address technical debt, and support sprint delivery processes.

Requirements

• Experience designing, building, and operating backend systems in production.
• Strong proficiency in Java or a comparable backend language.
• Experience with distributed systems, service integrations, system design, performance optimization, and debugging.
• Clear communication, reliable follow-through, early risk identification, and collaborative problem solving.
• Professional proficiency in written and spoken English.
• A degree is not required; equivalent experience, training, or transferable skills are considered.

Nice to have

• Familiarity with ad tech systems, bidding logic, or monetization infrastructure.
• Experience with server-to-server integrations or event-driven architectures.
• Experience in agile, sprint-based teams.
• Experience with observability tooling, metrics, and production debugging workflows.
