Java Senior Software Engineer (Distributed Databases)

Location: Remote or hybrid in Bulgaria; remote in Croatia, Estonia, Finland, Italy, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Spain, Armenia, and Cyprus.

Salary: €74,200–€100,400 gross per year.

What you will do

• Develop and test a scalable, geo-distributed, high-performance database solution.
• Improve database scalability, reliability, replication, sharding, concurrency, and performance.
• Design data structures, disk storage, inter-node networking, failure handling, and recovery mechanisms.
• Implement and integrate high-availability algorithms for distributed clusters.
• Profile, debug, and optimize Java applications using JFR, JMC, async-profiler, VisualVM, and related tools.
• Lead and mentor software engineers while collaborating with cross-functional teams and contributing to open source.

Requirements

• 4+ years of Java programming experience.
• Deep knowledge of Java concurrency, the Java Memory Model, Java SE, I/O, and JVM internals.
• Strong SQL and SQL database experience, including hirify.global, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Apache Ignite, or GridGain.
• Experience troubleshooting Java applications or databases and working with distributed, on-premise, and cloud-based systems.
• Understanding of distributed-systems concepts including Raft, MVCC, ACID, P2PL, Snapshot Isolation, and REPEATABLE READ.
• Strong leadership, problem-solving, debugging, and collaboration skills.

Nice to have

• Experience with NoSQL or distributed databases and high-load distributed systems.
• Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, or public cloud platforms such as AWS, GCE, or Azure.
• Open-source contributions, automation, performance testing, load testing, or active use of AI.
