World Service is developing a Horn of Africa Language Services Unit and transforming Somali into a digital-first, video-led news service.
What you will do
- Write accurate, engaging and SEO-aware articles in Somali for the Somali website.
- Produce and present short-form news videos, explainers, interviews and reaction pieces for YouTube, TikTok, Instagram Reels, Facebook and YouTube Shorts.
- Produce and present radio programmes and visualised podcasts for broadcast and streaming audiences.
- Self-shoot, script, film and edit video using mobile or camera equipment, including captions and basic graphics.
- Develop contacts across the Horn of Africa and use them for original reporting, tip-offs and on-the-ground newsgathering.
- Cover breaking news live across platforms while maintaining editorial standards.
Requirements
- Experience producing content for digital news websites, YouTube, TikTok, Instagram Reels, Facebook and radio.
- Strong written and spoken Somali and English, with the ability to write, sub-edit and present in both languages professionally.
- Experience producing, presenting, self-shooting and editing short-form video in studio, location, interview and news-gathering environments.
- Confidence presenting scripts, interviews and two-ways for broadcast and streaming audiences.
- Experience sourcing, verifying and reporting news accurately and impartially under deadline pressure, including verification of social media and user-generated content.
- Knowledge of audience analytics and platform insights for content development, commissioning and engagement growth.
