Senior Journalist (Digital News)

Location: Nairobi, Kenya. The role covers morning and late shifts and offers flexible working arrangements for discussion at offer stage.

hirify.global World Service provides independent news and information through radio and digital platforms, including hirify.global Great Lakes in Kinyarwanda and Kirundi.

What you will do

• Lead continuous digital publishing for the hirify.global Great Lakes website, including articles, video embeds, image galleries and social media posts.
• Commission, edit and deliver exclusives, investigations, explainers and other digital-first journalism.
• Support the transition to a digital-first, video-led service and develop a data-led video strategy to grow digital reach.
• Use audience analytics to evaluate performance and adjust commissioning and publishing decisions in real time.
• Supervise visualized and linear radio production, ensuring output works for broadcast, streaming and on-screen audiences.
• Manage shift workflows, allocate resources, deputise for the Assistant Editor and coach junior journalists.

Requirements

• Experience leading digital-first news output and driving engagement, traffic and audience growth.
• Hands-on experience commissioning and editing content for websites, YouTube, Facebook and YouTube Shorts.
• Strong knowledge of audience analytics tools and real-time performance-based decision-making.
• Understanding of search optimisation, YouTube watch time, Facebook sharing and high-retention vertical video for Instagram, TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Reels.
• Experience producing or supervising visualized radio output for both audio and on-screen audiences.
• Excellent scripting, writing and sub-editing skills in Kinyarwanda, Kirundi and English.
