Contract Staff Software Engineer (Firefox Layout)

Location: Remote in Canada

Hiring ranges: Canada Tier 1 locations: CAD 185,045–217,700; Canada Tier 2 locations: CAD 131,400–154,600.

What you will do

• Maintain Firefox’s Layout area, including CSS, page layout, APZ, text, and images.
• Fix bugs and regressions, resolve incoming issues, and keep tests passing.
• Diagnose and fix Layout problems across Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android.
• Perform code reviews and routine code upkeep to support mission-critical Performance and Security work.
• Participate in planning and web standards or web-compatibility meetings as needed.

Requirements

• Strong C++ skills; JavaScript and/or Rust experience is beneficial.
• Solid knowledge of CSS and page layout.
• Strong debugging and optimization skills in a multithreaded codebase.
• Ability to work independently and provide technical leadership in a large, mature codebase.
• Ability to work remotely from Canada.

Nice to have

• Experience with web browser architecture and development.
• Experience with web standards.
• Mobile web development, profiling, and debugging experience.
• Experience using AI tools such as Claude or ChatGPT for code investigation, development, debugging, or testing.
