Deputy Head of Compliance – Malta (Crypto)

What you will do

• Support the Head of Compliance in leading the compliance function, managing the annual plan, and deputising at management and committee meetings.
• Advise Product, Engineering, Operations, Legal, and Risk teams on MiCA, EU and Maltese regulations, payment services, DORA, and consumer protection.
• Maintain a risk-based compliance framework and review customer journeys, disclosures, complaints, conflicts of interest, safeguarding, outsourcing, and operational resilience.
• Run thematic reviews, control testing, risk assessments, breach escalation, and remediation activities.
• Support relationships with the MFSA and other authorities, including supervisory meetings, information requests, regulatory notifications, and returns.
• Prepare risk and monitoring reports, coach the Compliance team, deliver training, and collaborate with MLRO, Financial Crime, Risk, and Internal Audit teams.

Requirements

• At least 5 years of regulatory compliance experience in financial services, payments, fintech, or crypto assets, including experience in a senior role.
• A bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
• Deep knowledge of MiCA, the EU regulatory framework for crypto-asset service providers, and EU payment-services regulation.
• Practical experience designing and operating compliance frameworks, monitoring programmes, risk assessments, and compliance controls for technology-led products.
• Experience engaging with financial regulators and responding to supervisory reviews or inspections, with the professional standing required for regulatory fitness and propriety approvals.
• Professional fluency in English, strong people-management skills, independent judgement, and the ability to challenge senior stakeholders constructively.

Nice to have

• Experience in a regulated crypto-asset business, payment institution, electronic-money institution, or digital bank.
• Experience working in Malta or with the Malta Financial Services Authority.
• Experience deputising for a regulated Head of Compliance or approved compliance officer.
• Knowledge of safeguarding, stablecoins, outsourcing, operational resilience, consumer protection, and cross-border passporting requirements.
• Professional qualifications from the International Compliance Association, ACAMS, or an equivalent body, or a legal, accounting, risk-management, or regulatory qualification.
