TL;DR
Manufacturing Software Controls Engineer (PLC/SCADA): Configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting manufacturing control systems, including Allen Bradley PLCs, Rockwell Automation software, MES, SCADA, and data historians, with an accent on automation support, system validation, and site IT operations. Focus on diagnosing hardware, software, and networking issues, performing system upgrades and migrations, and supporting production during off-peak hours.
Location: North Chicago, Illinois, United States; onsite role
Salary: $65,500–$125,500 USD base pay annually

What you will do
- Configure and program manufacturing process, utilities, and facilities control systems according to functional requirements and design documentation.
- Provide first-line MES and automation support to engineering, maintenance, production, and technical operations teams.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot control-system hardware, software, and networking issues.
- Perform upgrades and data migrations for PLC, SCADA, and data historian systems.
- Develop and execute qualification protocols and technical documentation for validated IT systems.
- Administer site systems, including operating-system updates, antivirus maintenance, account management, backups, monitoring, and production support.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related discipline with 2 years of experience, or a master’s degree with no required experience.
- Hands-on experience configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting Allen Bradley PLCs and Rockwell Automation software.
- Experience with commissioning and qualification activities.
- Ability to provide production support outside regular business hours, including overnight and weekend work when required.
Nice to have
- Manufacturing or device-industry experience.
- Experience with MES programming and troubleshooting, JSON or SQL scripting, OPC UA communications with Kepware, and Inductive Automation Ignition.
- Knowledge of data historians such as OSIsoft PI.
- Experience with ladder logic, instructional texts, and HMI graphics development.
