Editor (Legal News)

Location: Based preferably in Sydney, with Melbourne also considered; occasional weekend availability may be required. Usual working hours are 11am to 7pm.

What you will do

• Edit and publish breaking news, analysis, and feature articles across legal, regulatory, business, and financial topics.
• Improve accuracy, clarity, structure, readability, grammar, spelling, and style.
• Write accurate, engaging headlines for a professional audience.
• Apply editorial standards, house style, and sound news judgement when prioritising stories.
• Identify and escalate legal, ethical, and editorial risks while providing constructive feedback to reporters.
• Help develop newsroom style guidance and collaborate with contributors, legal teams, and international colleagues.

Requirements

• Approximately 2 to 6 years of professional copy-editing experience.
• Experience editing news copy in a deadline-driven environment.
• Strong grammar, spelling, writing, headline-writing, and fact-checking skills.
• Sound editorial judgement, strong organisation, and the ability to manage competing deadlines independently.
• A relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent professional experience.
• Ability to work from Sydney or Melbourne and follow the newsroom schedule of approximately 11am to 7pm.

Nice to have

• Previous experience as a journalist or reporter who progressed into copy editing.
• Experience editing legal, financial, or business news.
