Machine Learning Engineer (AI)

Location: US remote eligible; residence is required in a state where Airbnb, Inc. has a registered entity. Occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites may be required by agreement with the manager.

Salary: $200,000–$235,000 USD base pay per year, with possible bonus, equity, benefits, and Employee Travel Credits.

What you will do

• Build and continuously improve machine-learning models for search, recommendation, and query understanding.
• Develop autocomplete, smart compose, query tagging, named-entity recognition, query expansion, and user-intent modeling capabilities.
• Create natural-language and multimodal search experiences using modern NLP and large language models.
• Develop, productionize, and operate machine-learning models and pipelines for batch and real-time use cases.
• Collaborate with software engineers, product managers, operations, and data scientists to prioritize requirements and measure business impact.
• Improve model development, low-latency serving, experimentation efficiency, and quality maintenance at scale.

Requirements

• 5+ years of industry experience in applied machine learning, including relevant MS or PhD experience.
• Strong programming and data-engineering skills in Scala, Python, Java, C++, or equivalent technologies.
• Deep knowledge of machine-learning best practices, neural networks, deep learning, optimization, NLP, personalization, search, recommendation, and marketplace optimization.
• Experience with at least three of TensorFlow, PyTorch, Kubernetes, Spark, Airflow, Kafka, data warehouses, or equivalent tools.
• Experience building end-to-end machine-learning models and applying LLMs and modern NLP techniques such as sequence tagging, NER, text generation, intent classification, or representation learning.
• Must live in an eligible US state where Airbnb, Inc. has a registered entity.

Nice to have

• Experience building natural-language, AI-native, and agentic search experiences.
• Familiarity with large-scale software architecture, well-designed APIs, high-volume data pipelines, and efficient algorithms.
