TL;DR
Project Coordinator, Childcare Economy, PlayMatters (Early Childhood Development): Coordinating the launch and delivery of a childcare economy component across Ethiopia and Uganda with an accent on provider support, partner coordination, budget management, and child development outcomes. Focus on mapping childcare ecosystems, connecting providers with financing and technical support, tracking economic sustainability, and building evidence for viable childcare services beyond the grant period.

Location: Kampala, Uganda or Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with frequent travel to project locations in both countries

What you will do

  • Coordinate the Outcome 4 inception phase and delivery of the Childcare Economy component across Ethiopia and Uganda.
  • Lead project planning, scheduling, budget oversight, expenditure tracking, and progress reporting.
  • Coordinate technical partners, childcare providers, financing partners, government stakeholders, and IRC technical units.
  • Support provider mapping, geographic selection, business coaching, financing access, training, and capacity building.
  • Oversee monitoring of child development and provider economic sustainability indicators.
  • Coordinate donor communications, reporting, evidence generation, and representation in technical working groups.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, early childhood development, international development, economics, business administration, or a related field; a master’s degree is an advantage.
  • At least 5 years of project management experience, including large-scale, cross-functional, multi-location projects; multi-country experience is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in education or early childhood development, childcare provider business models, financing, policy, and regulatory environments.
  • Experience managing partners, budgets, training, coaching, capacity building, and donor or client representation.
  • Experience in complex humanitarian or post-conflict settings is required; Ethiopia or Uganda experience is an advantage.
  • Fluent English with exceptionally strong writing and presentation skills is essential; frequent travel between Ethiopia, Uganda, and field locations is required, potentially covering 40–50% or more of working time.

Nice to have

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field.
  • Working knowledge of Amharic or a relevant Ugandan language.
  • Experience with the Nurturing Care Framework, results-based financing, blended finance, or grant-to-loan pathways.
