Director, Product Development, HB/SLGs

What you will do

• Lead the end-to-end product development process for handbags and small leather goods, from design handoff through prototypes, approvals, commercialization, and production readiness.
• Coordinate with Design, New York Product Development, Technical, Quality Assurance, Raw Materials, Costing, Testing, Production, and vendor partners.
• Evaluate construction, materials, workmanship, fit-for-use, quality, cost, manufacturing feasibility, and production risks.
• Drive sample execution, testing follow-up, approval progress, issue resolution, and escalation against seasonal timelines.
• Establish development standards and monitor KPIs including sample hit rate, approval lead time, issue closure, calendar adherence, and production readiness.
• Lead, coach, and develop the product development team while strengthening accountability, problem-solving, cross-functional influence, and vendor partnerships.

Requirements

• 15+ years of experience in product development, pre-production, or commercialization for handbags and small leather goods.
• 5+ years of leadership experience managing product development teams and seasonal priorities.
• Strong knowledge of handbag and small leather goods construction, materials, trims, finishing, testing, and manufacturing processes.
• Ability to balance design intent with technical feasibility, quality, cost, vendor capability, production efficiency, and consumer-use expectations.
• Strong problem-solving, communication, influencing, stakeholder management, decision-making, escalation, and vendor partnership skills.
• Fluent written and spoken English required; proficiency in Microsoft Office and structured development tracking tools.

Nice to have

• Mandarin or Cantonese language skills.
• Experience with seasonal calendars, sample trackers, issue logs, PLM systems, or other product workflow platforms.
