TL;DR
Principal AI Engineer (f/m/x) (LLM/RAG): Building and operating production AI applications, permission-aware retrieval, model gateways, and evaluation infrastructure with an accent on retrieval, authorization, model infrastructure, and production evaluation. Focus on designing enterprise-grade AI platforms, establishing reliable release benchmarks, mentoring senior engineers, and operating systems under real-world load.
Location: Vienna, Austria; hybrid work with on-site presence 2–3 times per week
Salary: Minimum gross annual salary of €80,000 for a full-time 35-hour week

What you will do
- Own architectural decisions for AI systems and serve as the senior technical voice for the AI team.
- Design and build permission enforcement at retrieval time and partner with Data Engineering on the semantic layer interface.
- Design and operate the model gateway as platform-grade infrastructure.
- Establish evaluation methodologies, benchmarks, and release standards for AI applications.
- Mentor senior engineers, lead technical reviews, and contribute to hiring.
- Operate AI components and participate in on-call responsibilities while collaborating with Security, Legal, Compliance, and Platform Engineering.
Requirements
- 10+ years of engineering experience and hands-on delivery of production LLM or AI application systems, or a strong background in retrieval, evaluation, model infrastructure, search, or data platforms.
- Depth in at least two areas including permission-aware retrieval, LLM evaluation, production model infrastructure, agent or workflow infrastructure, and knowledge-graph construction.
- Production RAG experience, including tuning, evaluation, and operation under real load.
- Experience building complex authorization-aware data systems and authoring architectural decision records or equivalent technical designs.
- Production cloud experience; AWS with Bedrock is strongly preferred, with AWS, Snowflake, and dbt used as group standards.
- Fluent written and verbal English, strong technical writing skills, current coding fluency, and production on-call experience.
Nice to have
- Experience as the senior technical counterpart to a Data or Platform team.
- Hands-on experience with AWS, Snowflake, dbt, or comparable infrastructure.
- Familiarity with enterprise retrieval products and evaluation tooling such as Glean, Notion AI Enterprise, and vector database platforms.
