TL;DR
Staff Software Engineer (Portable Libraries, Rust/C++): Building production-grade portable libraries for iOS, Android, and web from a shared codebase with an accent on systems programming, native interoperability, and cross-platform API design. Focus on shaping interface and memory-safety models, designing ergonomic foreign-function boundaries, and leading hands-on technical direction across mobile runtimes.

Location: Melbourne, Australia; hybrid work with regular collaboration on the Melbourne campus

Canva is a design platform whose Client Platform group builds the foundations used across web, iOS, and Android products.

What you will do

  • Own the portable libraries problem space across iOS, Android, and web.
  • Build fast, safe, and reliable production libraries in Rust and C++.
  • Design interfaces, safety models, APIs, and developer ergonomics for multiple runtimes.
  • Work hands-on with Staff engineers to shape Mobile Platform technical direction.
  • Communicate designs across the stack and support frontend engineers consuming the libraries.
  • Ship libraries to production and establish patterns for future mobile platform work.

Requirements

  • Production experience building mobile software for both iOS and Android.
  • Production experience with Rust; experience with C++ and systems programming is relevant.
  • Staff-level experience solving ambiguous problems and defining technical direction.
  • Knowledge of ABI boundaries, memory safety across language barriers, foreign-function interfaces, and portable library architecture.
  • Experience with native iOS and Android runtimes, JavaScript interoperability, React Native, and library API design.
  • Strong technical communication, design-document writing, computer science fundamentals, and practical use of AI agents.

Nice to have

  • Experience migrating a mature mobile product to a new architecture.
  • Open-source contributions to React Native, Expo, or the cross-platform mobile ecosystem.
  • Experience with mobile CI/CD, release trains, and over-the-air updates at scale.
