Principal Software Engineer (Experimentation Platform)

Location: United States; primary location: Bentonville, Arkansas

Annual salary: $110,000–$220,000 in Bentonville or $143,000–$286,000 in Sunnyvale, plus potential performance bonuses and stock.

What you will do

• Define the technical direction and multi-quarter roadmap for experimentation platform backend services.
• Design, develop, test, and scale reliable systems and data pipelines supporting experimentation across Walmart's digital surfaces.
• Lead architecture proposals, design reviews, cross-functional projects, and cross-organizational initiatives.
• Partner with data scientists, product managers, analytics teams, platform teams, and engineering leaders to advance experimentation methodologies and adoption.
• Drive incident mitigation, troubleshooting, root cause analysis, observability, security, and operational excellence.
• Mentor Staff and Senior Engineers and guide evaluations and adoption of emerging technologies.

Requirements

• Technical leadership experience with engineering teams and the ability to influence decisions across organizations.
• Experience designing, developing, testing, and maintaining large-scale systems.
• Expertise in one or more of Java, Scala, Lua, or Rust.
• Experience maintaining and deploying compute environments across local and cloud-based systems.
• Expertise in reliability engineering, observability, platform governance, and operational excellence for mission-critical systems.
• Bachelor's degree in a relevant field plus 5 years of software engineering experience, or 7 years of relevant experience.

Nice to have

• Experience with experimentation, A/B testing, feature flags, and risk-mitigated deployments.
• Experience building data solutions and AI/ML products.
• Contributions to open-source frameworks, standards, or libraries.
• Master's degree in a relevant field.
• Knowledge of WCAG 2.2 AA, assistive technologies, and digital accessibility practices.
