Assistant General Counsel (Retirement & Employee Benefits)

Location: Remote - Nationwide within the United States. Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S.; employment visa sponsorship, including CPT/OPT sponsorship, is not available.

Base salary: $151,800–$220,050 per year, plus eligibility for a bonus program.

What you will do

• Serve as the principal legal advisor for defined benefit and multiemployer Taft-Hartley retirement businesses.
• Advise on ERISA, tax, fiduciary, operational, administrative, compliance, and regulatory matters.
• Support the design, administration, enhancement, and growth of retirement, health, welfare, and consumer-directed healthcare products.
• Provide counsel on plan qualification, funding, corrections, risk-transfer transactions, freezes, mergers, spin-offs, and terminations.
• Partner with Product, Operations, Client Service, Sales, Investments, Compliance, Risk, Finance, Technology, and other functions.
• Lead complex initiatives and develop legal frameworks, governance processes, and practical risk-management solutions.

Requirements

• Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school and an active license to practice law.
• 12+ years of relevant legal experience.
• Recognized expertise in defined benefit and multiemployer Taft-Hartley plans, including qualification, funding, administration, fiduciary matters, compliance, and correction programs.
• Experience with health and welfare plans, defined contribution plans, IRAs, and retirement savings products.
• Strong knowledge of ERISA, the Internal Revenue Code, Treasury regulations, IRS and Department of Labor guidance, and related employee benefits laws.
• Ability to translate complex legal requirements into practical business advice and influence decisions across multiple functions.

Nice to have

• In-house experience in retirement plan recordkeeping, financial services, insurance, trust, custody, asset management, or employee benefits.
• Experience with pension risk transfer, plan terminations, de-risking, product enhancements, or operational transformation.
• Experience interacting with IRS and Department of Labor regulators or managing examinations, audits, and enforcement matters.
