TL;DR
MAIT Additive Manufacturing Materials Intern (Aerospace): Supporting the development, characterization, qualification, and industrialization of materials for LPBF spaceflight components with an accent on alloy development, powder management, process parameters, and material testing. Focus on operating LPBF equipment, analyzing metallurgical and mechanical data, preparing technical documentation, and supporting quality investigations.

Location: Düsseldorf, Germany; on-site

What you will do

  • Support additive manufacturing material characterization campaigns and analyze powder, metallurgical, microstructural, and mechanical testing data.
  • Contribute to alloy development, LPBF process parameter development, material characterization, and heat treatment optimization.
  • Assist with LPBF build preparation, process monitoring, post-build evaluation, and operation of LPBF equipment after training.
  • Prepare build reports, material test summaries, work instructions, manufacturing procedures, and qualification documentation.
  • Support quality activities, including non-conformance investigations, data collection, and corrective action tracking.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing or having completed a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
  • Good fundamentals in materials science, material characterization methodologies, and mechanical testing.
  • Strong interest in additive manufacturing technologies and aerospace applications.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with careful and consistent technical documentation.
  • Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary and international teams.
  • Fluent English required; the role is on-site in Düsseldorf, Germany.

Nice to have

  • Experience with LPBF, metallography, microscopy, powder characterization, or mechanical testing.
  • Knowledge of nickel-based superalloys, titanium alloys, copper alloys, and stainless steels.
  • Experience in laboratory, manufacturing, or research environments.
  • Experience preparing laboratory reports, build reports, work instructions, test documentation, or technical procedures.
  • Experience with Excel, Python, R, or similar data analysis and visualization tools.
