TL;DR
Principal Tooling Engineer (Aerospace): Designing and delivering custom tooling, material-handling systems, production fixtures, and ground support equipment for high-power satellite manufacturing with an accent on hands-on fabrication, structural analysis, and production scalability. Focus on developing and validating mechanical assemblies, supporting large-scale qualification testing, and collaborating across engineering and production teams on complex spacecraft systems.

Location: Los Angeles, CA, United States

Base salary: $175,000–$200,000 per year, plus equity.

What you will do

  • Design and fabricate tooling and material-handling systems for satellite buses, subsystems, and associated hardware.
  • Lead satellite subsystem production fixture development from project kickoff through production and subsequent improvements.
  • Develop tooling, size and structurally analyze ground support equipment, and improve manufacturing and production operations.
  • Support ground test setups, flight hardware, development fixtures, and customer tooling requirements.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define product requirements, tooling methods, and project schedules.
  • Build tooling with internal and external fabrication resources, educate end-user teams, and validate tool performance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 8+ years of industry experience in mechanical and/or electromechanical design and analysis.
  • Experience with CAD or FEA software, including professional, academic, entrepreneurial, or hobby experience.
  • Hands-on fabrication experience.
  • Experience designing, building, and testing mechanical assemblies and tooling for aerospace or terrestrial applications.
  • The role involves access to ITAR-controlled information and items; the hired candidate must be a U.S. person or otherwise eligible for a federally issued export control license.

Nice to have

  • Experience with shipping, materials handling, clean room operations, GD&T, NX, Teamcenter PLM, or structural analysis tools such as Simcenter 3D, Femap, or Hypermesh.
  • Experience owning mechanical hardware or systems within an integrated engineering team.
  • Understanding of structural analysis and failure modes of complex mechanical systems in space environments and operations.
  • Experience with actuators, controls, data acquisition, or dedicated test and automation equipment.
