Outpatient Coding Consultant (Healthcare)

What you will do

• Review medical records and assign accurate diagnosis, procedure, discharge disposition, and APC codes.
• Sequence codes based on medical record documentation and abstract coded data for hospital reporting and statistical requirements.
• Identify documentation improvement opportunities and coding issues, communicating them to relevant personnel for resolution.
• Maintain 95% coding accuracy and 95% APC assignment accuracy while meeting productivity standards.
• Track continuing education credits, attend health education sessions, and comply with HIM policies and AHIMA ethics requirements.
• Communicate with coworkers, management, and hospital staff regarding clinical and reimbursement issues.

Requirements

• AHIMA credentials such as RHIA, RHIT, or CCS, or AAPC credentials such as CPC, CPC-H, COC, CIC, or CRC.
• At least 2 years of coding experience in a hospital or coding consulting role.
• Proficiency in relevant outpatient coding specialties, including same-day surgery, observation, injections and infusions, ancillary services, emergency department, and E/M leveling.
• Experience with computerized encoding and abstracting software.
• Strong written and verbal communication, time management, organization, teamwork, and remote-work skills.
• Successful completion of annual introductory HIPAA training and other assigned annual testing.
