Gas Testing Engineer (Isotope Enrichment)

Location: Oak Ridge, Tennessee, USA; on-site laboratory role

What you will do

• Characterize isotope enrichment centrifuges and related processes by evaluating processing parameters and developing approaches to mitigate chemical and physical process limitations.
• Develop, document, and execute complex gas-testing plans involving substantial data collection, analysis, results assessment, and continuous process improvement.
• Post-process experimental data for model validation and prepare peer-reviewed scientific reports, technical reports, and presentations.
• Contribute to formal design, instrumentation, analysis, and fabrication plans for prototype enrichment systems.
• Collaborate with principal investigators, engineers, modelers, fabricators, operations personnel, management, and research staff.
• Maintain compliance with Environment, Safety and Health and quality-assurance requirements.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Nuclear, Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace Engineering, or a related discipline, plus four years of relevant experience; equivalent education and experience may be considered.
• Strong understanding of chemical process unit operations, separations, chemical reaction science, and chemical engineering thermodynamics.
• Experience with cross-disciplinary teams, process flow diagrams, and equipment design.
• Ability to communicate clearly with sponsoring agencies, engineers, researchers, technicians, and craftsmen.
• Ability to work flexible hours and travel when required.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy clearance is required, along with pre-placement and ongoing random workplace substance-abuse testing.

Nice to have

• MS or PhD in Chemical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related discipline.
• Active DOE Q clearance or Professional Engineer license.
• Experience with system requirements, chemical design calculations, pipe sizing for gas flows and vacuum, and vacuum system design.
• Experience working independently and creatively in fast-paced research environments.
