Staff Software Engineer (Portable Libraries Rust/C++): Building performant, safe, and reliable portable libraries for iOS, Android, and web from a shared codebase with an accent on systems programming, native interop, and cross-platform mobile architecture. Focus on designing library interfaces, safety models, and foreign-function boundaries, while shaping technical direction through hands-on engineering and clear communication.

Location: Melbourne, Victoria, Australia; hybrid work with regular collaboration on the Melbourne campus

What you will do

  • Own the portable libraries problem space across iOS, Android, and web.
  • Build production-grade libraries in Rust and C++ that are fast, safe, and reliable across devices.
  • Design interfaces, safety models, APIs, and developer ergonomics for multiple runtimes.
  • Work hands-on with Staff engineers to shape Mobile Platform's technical direction.
  • Communicate designs and trade-offs to frontend and mobile engineers consuming the libraries.
  • Define patterns that become foundations for future mobile platform work.

Requirements

  • Production experience building mobile software for both iOS and Android.
  • Production experience with Rust; experience with C++ and system-language libraries is relevant.
  • Experience solving ambiguous, high-impact technical problems at Staff level.
  • Knowledge of ABI boundaries, memory safety across language barriers, foreign-function interfaces, and native interop.
  • Experience with cross-platform architecture, library API design, React Native runtime integration, and mobile fundamentals.
  • Strong technical communication, including design documents that guide engineering decisions.

Nice to have

  • Experience migrating a mature mobile product to a new architecture.
  • Open-source contributions to React Native, Expo, or the cross-platform mobile ecosystem.
  • Experience with mobile CI/CD, release trains, and over-the-air updates at scale.
