Lead Software Engineer (Umbraco)

Location: UK-wide hybrid

Salary: £55,000–£62,000 per year

What you will do

• Provide senior technical leadership across Umbraco platforms, setting standards and making sustainable architectural decisions.
• Plan and lead major Umbraco version upgrades, assessing package and integration compatibility and managing delivery risk.
• Define technical approaches, architecture, estimates, delivery plans, scope, assumptions, and risks.
• Lead high-quality agile delivery through planning, code reviews, retrospectives, collaboration, and technical issue resolution.
• Act as the senior technical contact for clients, explaining technical decisions and directing responses to incidents and support issues.
• Develop engineers through pairing, review, mentorship, and contributions to shared engineering standards and practice.

Requirements

• Deep, demonstrable production experience with Umbraco across recent major versions, including content modelling, custom development, package ecosystems, and major upgrades.
• Strong .NET and C# capability, with experience writing and reviewing maintainable object-oriented code.
• Experience with Umbraco Cloud or equivalent managed hosting, Azure, deployment workflows, environment management, Git, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Proficiency in API design and consumption, REST, GraphQL, third-party integrations, SQL Server, database design, and efficient querying.
• Experience building responsive, accessible component-based interfaces and applying WCAG 2.2 or higher and security best practices.
• Proven technical leadership, agile delivery, mentoring, client communication, and problem solving without line management responsibility.

Nice to have

• Experience with Azure Functions, App Services, and supporting infrastructure.
• Headless or decoupled Umbraco and API-first delivery experience.
• Experience with React, Next.js, donation or payment platforms, Drupal, or WordPress.
• AI-assisted engineering or agentic tooling experience.
• Experience in the charity, non-profit, or membership sector.
