Staff Software Engineer - Export

Canva develops a collaborative design platform whose Export team transforms designs into downloadable files for sharing, printing, AI model training, and thumbnail generation.

What you will do

• Own the technical direction and architecture of Canva's Chromium-based export pipeline.
• Lead solutions for rendering failures, race conditions, upgrade breakages, and production incidents caused by upstream Chromium changes.
• Build monitoring and testing infrastructure to detect Chromium regressions and design for changing output structures.
• Set the direction for PDF accessibility and compliance, including PDF/UA and WCAG requirements for Enterprise customers.
• Lead export reliability and performance improvements across format optimisation and distributed systems serving more than 50 million weekly downloads.
• Mentor engineers through design reviews, debugging sessions, documentation, and collaboration across the Editing Platform group.

Requirements

• Deep experience with Chromium or another browser rendering engine, including work inside the engine or a comparable large codebase.
• Strong C++ skills for investigating and modifying complex third-party code.
• Experience with rendering pipelines, graphics programming, or print production systems.
• Strong Java backend engineering experience.
• End-to-end ownership of a technical domain, including architecture, trade-offs, and long-term maintenance.
• Experience debugging layered systems across multiple codebases and languages, and mentoring engineers through complex investigations.

Nice to have

• Knowledge of PDF specifications or experience with PDF generation and post-processing.
• Experience with accessibility standards for documents or file output.
