TL;DR
Senior Sign Language Specialist (ASL): Maintaining and expanding an ASL sign dictionary, annotating ASL video, and evaluating text-to-sign avatar output with an accent on gloss conventions, classifier predicates, non-manual markers, role shift, and ASL grammar. Location: Canada (Remote Only)

Provides language services for Deaf and hard-of-hearing communities, including sign language interpreting, captioning, translation, and communication technologies.

What you will do

  • Maintain and expand the ASL sign dictionary, including new entries, regional and register variants, and disputed-entry resolution.
  • Annotate ASL video using advanced gloss conventions, classifier predicates, non-manual markers, role shift, and prosody.
  • Partner with AI/ML engineering teams to define linguistic requirements, review model outputs, and document edge cases.
  • Evaluate text-to-sign avatar output for grammatical accuracy, naturalness, and cultural appropriateness using standardized rubrics.
  • Lead weekly linguistic calibration sessions and maintain gloss, classifier, and annotation documentation.
  • Mentor Sign Language Specialists and maintain accurate annotation records and decision logs.

Requirements

  • Canada-based remote work is required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in ASL Linguistics, Deaf Studies, ASL Studies, Interpreting, Deaf Education, or a related field.
  • At least 3 years of substantive professional ASL experience in annotation, linguistics, interpreting, Deaf education, or a comparable area.
  • Bilingual ASL and English proficiency is required, including professional English transcription from ASL source content.
  • Deep knowledge of ASL linguistics, experience with ASL content annotation, strong written English, and familiarity with computer-based annotation and collaboration tools.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively; regular and predictable attendance is required.

Nice to have

  • Graduate degree in ASL Linguistics, Linguistics, Deaf Studies, Interpreting, Deaf Education, or a related field.
  • ASL as a primary or native language.
  • Experience with ELAN, CVAT, or comparable annotation platforms.
  • Experience with AI/ML teams, signed avatars, annotation guidelines, lexicography, sign language corpora, or mentoring annotators.
  • Familiarity with PSE, SEE, and other North American signing varieties.
