TL;DR
Mechanical Engineer I (Robotics) (SolidWorks/FEA): Developing reliable robotic and automation systems, mechanisms, sensors, and vehicle components across the full product lifecycle with an accent on CAD design, engineering analysis, prototyping, and production transition. Focus on designing mechanisms with multiple degrees of freedom, modelling mechanical risks with FEA and CFD, and testing products in on-site facilities.

Location: Pittsburgh, PA, United States; on-site work with occasional travel of 5% or less

Company

Carnegie Robotics designs and manufactures rugged robotics systems and components for defense, agriculture, mining, industrial, and off-road autonomy applications.

What you will do

  • Perform engineering work across the product lifecycle, from concept development through fielded-product support.
  • Develop customer and product requirements, concept designs, feasibility studies, and proposal input for robotics applications.
  • Model parts and assemblies in CAD and design mechanisms, sensors, and components with multiple degrees of freedom.
  • Analyze mechanical risks and failures using hand calculations, spreadsheets, Python scripts, FEA, and CFD.
  • Create manufacturing drawings using GD&T, support design-for-manufacturability improvements, and collaborate with suppliers.
  • Prototype, test, and transition robotic products to validated production builds while collaborating with software, electrical, systems, and production engineers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, preferably mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related field.
  • Product design experience integrating mechanisms and electronics, including collaboration with software and electrical engineers.
  • Strong CAD skills; SolidWorks is preferred.
  • Experience with engineering analysis, including bearing life, motor loads, material selection, and static and dynamic load cases.
  • Understanding of mechanisms and tradeoffs among cost, weight, reliability, lead time, and complexity; experience with COTS trade studies and make-versus-buy decisions.
  • Authorization to work for any US employer is required; visa sponsorship is not available.

Nice to have

  • Experience with passive thermal design and analysis, environmental sealing, FEA, custom gear trains, and production-level design and testing.
  • Familiarity with GD&T drawings, BOM management, and releasing products to production.
  • Working knowledge of at least one programming language.
  • Personal experience building and testing engineering projects.

Culture & Benefits

  • Interdisciplinary work across office, test facilities, production, and vehicle assembly spaces.
  • UPMC health coverage with FSA or HSA options.
  • Dental, vision, and life insurance.
  • Fidelity 401(k) plan with employer match.
  • 31 days of PTO including holidays, catered lunch, and comp time for company travel.
