TL;DR
Ophthalmic Technician I - Cambridge, Wellesley, and Framingham (Ophthalmology): Providing preliminary patient workups, vision screenings, diagnostic testing, ocular imaging, and clinical support in ophthalmology practices with an accent on patient assessment, eye-care procedures, and accurate documentation. Focus on performing OCT, topography, visual fields, and other tests, assisting physicians, maintaining ophthalmic equipment, and supporting patient flow in high-volume clinics.

Location: Cambridge, Wellesley, and Framingham, Massachusetts; may require floating to satellite offices with personal transportation

Pay range: $21.53–$26.91 per hour

What you will do

  • Collect patient medical, ocular, medication, allergy, and visit histories.
  • Perform visual acuity, lensometry, refraction, keratometry, pupil evaluation, eye-pressure measurement, and drop instillation.
  • Assist with diagnostic testing and ocular imaging, including OCT, topography, visual fields, and IOL Master testing.
  • Prepare consent forms and assist physicians with in-office procedures.
  • Set up, clean, disinfect, calibrate, and maintain examination rooms, instruments, supplies, and equipment.
  • Support clinic flow and document examination information in the electronic health record.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least one year of experience in a healthcare-related setting.
  • Basic Life Support certification, or the ability to obtain it within three months of hire.
  • Knowledge of eye terminology, basic ocular anatomy, and physiology.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, attention-to-detail, and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to assist elderly, visually impaired, wheelchair-using, and sensory-impaired patients and to work in a fast-paced, high-volume clinic.

Nice to have

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • Completion of ophthalmic, optometric, or medical assistant training, or the AAO Home Study Course.
  • Previous ophthalmic practice experience.
  • Experience with computer scheduling systems.
