Senior Technology Manager (Technology Transfer)

Location: On site in Bozeman, Montana, United States; remote work is not feasible. The role includes frequent in-person interactions and occasional travel to industry conferences and sponsor meetings.

Salary: $105,000–$125,000 annually, commensurate with experience, education, and qualifications.

What you will do

• Identify and evaluate university technologies with commercial and licensing potential and facilitate intellectual property disclosures.
• Analyze patent landscapes, competitive intellectual property, technology markets, and potential industry customers.
• Create technology marketing materials and conduct outreach to companies through email, phone, professional networks, and conferences.
• Support university startups with customer discovery, market research, commercialization plans, and product-market analysis.
• Draft, review, negotiate, edit, and track licensing, research collaboration, inter-institutional, and sponsored research agreements.
• Maintain relationships with university departments, sponsors, collaborators, and licensees while keeping technology transfer records accurate.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in engineering, physics, or another relevant field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• At least five years of experience in a technology-driven company, excluding academia, research institutes, and nonprofits.
• Understanding of intellectual property, particularly patents, and demonstrated experience moving technology from R&D to the marketplace.
• Outstanding verbal and written communication, interpersonal, organizational, and collaboration skills.
• Ability to work autonomously, manage strict deadlines, adapt to changing priorities, and interact with faculty, administrators, sponsors, and industry partners.
• The position is not eligible for visa sponsorship. Compliance with U.S. export control laws may require proof of U.S. person status.

Nice to have

• PhD in engineering, physics, or another relevant field, or equivalent education and experience.
• Ten years of experience in a technology-driven company and experience with deeptech startups, venture funding, product development, product-market fit, or exit events.
• Expertise in intellectual property licensing, company IP strategy, trade secrets, legal language, and contract negotiation.
• Experience with university technology transfer, the Bayh–Dole Act, and related federal compliance frameworks.
• Knowledge of software development, cloud computing, artificial intelligence and machine learning, data analytics, cybersecurity, mobile applications, enterprise software, or digital platforms.
