TL;DR
Senior Automation Controls Engineer (PLC/SCADA/Robotics): Designing, developing, and commissioning automated manufacturing systems across La-Z-Boy operations with an accent on controls architecture, machine integration, and operational performance. Focus on leading first-of-kind automation projects, troubleshooting production equipment, improving OEE, and standardizing controls practices across facilities.
Location: Monroe, Michigan, United States. Full-time role with up to 25% travel or travel as required to support projects.

What you will do
- Lead controls architecture and automation engineering for new manufacturing and capital equipment projects.
- Design, program, integrate, and support PLC, HMI, SCADA, motion control, and industrial network systems.
- Integrate robotics, vision systems, sensors, servo systems, and automated material-handling equipment.
- Lead projects from concept through commissioning and production launch, managing scopes, specifications, budgets, schedules, vendors, and contractors.
- Troubleshoot production automation, eliminate recurring equipment failures, and improve uptime, throughput, reliability, and OEE.
- Mentor controls engineers, technicians, and maintenance personnel while standardizing controls hardware, software, and engineering practices.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical, computer, mechanical, or mechatronics engineering, or a related technical field, with 8–10 years of relevant experience or equivalent qualifications.
- Demonstrated experience leading automation projects in a manufacturing environment.
- Hands-on experience with PLC programming, HMI development, industrial networking, and machine controls.
- Ability to travel up to 25% or as required to support projects and meet applicable driver-management qualifications when driving is required.
Nice to have
- Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- Experience in furniture, consumer goods, automotive, or high-volume manufacturing.
- Experience with Industry 4.0, IIoT, MES, and digital transformation initiatives.
- SolidWorks 3D or AutoCAD experience for mechanical parts, systems, and facility drawings.
